Philippine Mangoes

A spoonful of mango :)

I cannot believe that I am reaching my second year of blogging and I have not yet featured Mangoes on their own.

When I was in Macau and has jumped off the high tower for the bungee jump, I remember sharing small talk with the person removing my harness. The exchange went like:

Him: Where are you from?
Me: From the Philippines. You should go there some time.
Him: I know! You’re famous for…
Me: Beaches? We have tons of that!
Him: Mangoes! You’re mangoes are supposed to great.
Me: Yes they are! :)

Mango "pisngi" = Mango cheek :)

Of course, having never tasted “foreign” mangoes, I have nothing to compare it to.  All I know is that some of the mangoes that I see on TV, which are either Mexican mangoes, which I think are the red skinned ones, or some local mango (if not featuring the Manila Mango), have really huge pits, and not that juicy, I think.

But here, on an off-season month of January, we have mangoes. What used to be a summer fruit has become an all season fruit. I do love it, though I miss the deluge of mangoes  in every corner during the summer season :) And yes, this is how we eat mangoes: slice away from pits to get the cheeks off, scoop from the cheeks and suck the pit! :)

YES! I lived in the Philippines for 2 1/2 years and the mangoes are AMAZING. (the beaches are pretty great, too :) )They really are wonderful plain. Have you tried the Filipino snack of dipping green mango slices in soy sauce with rock salt in it? So good.

Oh! Glad to hear that you enjoyed the fruit during your long stay here! :)

I’m not a fan of sour things :P So yes, I have tried the green mango in all kinds of dips but the best way for me to tolerate it is in a fruit shake sweetened with some sugar :D

We still have the best mangoes.

Oh! I thought that the ones they call Manila Mangoes are from the Philippines! Madaya! I do love mangoes, and I’m glad to know that I have tasted the best mangoes the world has to offer :)
